Beard Oil vs Beard Balm vs Beard Butter: Which One Do You Actually Need?

Beard Oil vs Beard Balm vs Beard Butter: Which One Do You Actually Need?

If you’re beginning your beard journey, you’ve likely wondered: should I use beard oil, beard balm, or beard cream? Do I need more than one? Which is best for my beard?

By the end of this guide you’ll know exactly which one fits your beard length and routine.

1. Beard oil — and who it’s for

Beard oil is the foundation. It’s lightweight and fast-absorbing, and it hydrates both the beard hair and the skin underneath. That makes it the most important product for preventing itch, flaking, dry patches and split ends.

Best for: new beard growers, short beards and stubble, men with dry or sensitive skin, daily use.

Our Buck YEAH Beard Oil is vegan, gluten-free, cruelty-free, pharmacist-formulated and made in the USA — and formulated without argan, almond or any tree-nut oils.

2. Beard balm — and who it’s for

Balm is oil plus structure. It contains hydrating oils, conditioning butters and light natural waxes, which gives it hold and shape control alongside moisture.

Best for: medium to long beards, taming flyaways, styling and shaping, protection from wind and cold.

Unlike most balms on the market, our Buck YEAH Beard Balm contains no beeswax — it uses carnauba and BTMS wax instead, which is what makes it genuinely vegan rather than almost vegan.

One thing to know: the balm contains refined shea and cocoa butter, both nut-derived. If you’re avoiding tree nuts, the beard oil is the product in our range formulated without them.

3. Beard cream — and who it’s for

Cream sits between oil and balm. It’s a leave-in conditioner for deep softening of coarse hair, with no wax and therefore no hold — just conditioning.

Best for: coarse or wiry beards, dry climates, the itchy growing-out phase, men who want softness without any styling product.

Our Beard & Scruff Cream is built for exactly that window, and the Hemp Beard Cream is the richer daily version.

Short beards Best Not needed Optional
Long beards Good Best Best
How often Daily Daily or as needed 3–5× weekly

5. Which should you use?

Stubble or short beard (0–1 inch): Beard Oil. It prevents itch and hydrates the skin. Add cream if the hair feels coarse.

Medium beard (1–3 inches): Oil plus balm. Oil looks after the skin, balm shapes the beard.

Long beard (3+ inches): Oil, cream and balm — daily hydration, deep conditioning and all-day hold.

6. Sensitive skin?

If you get redness, flaking or irritation, look for products that are nut-free, gluten-free, vegan and made with a short ingredient list. Ours are pharmacist-formulated, and we’re specific about which products carry which claim rather than applying them all across the range.

7. How to layer oil and balm

  1. Apply beard oil to a damp beard — skin first, hair second.

  2. Brush or comb with the grooming tools to distribute it evenly.

  3. Apply beard balm — warm it between your fingers, then smooth through for hold and shape.

  4. Comb through for a fuller finish.
