Beard Growth Myths Men Need to Stop Believing — According to Science (and Common Sense)

bucking beards

Men love beard myths. We repeat them, we defend them, and we swear they’re true because our cousin’s roommate’s barber said so. Most of it is wrong, outdated, or just funny. Let’s go through them.

Myth 1: “Shaving makes your beard grow back thicker”

It doesn’t. Shaving cuts the hair tip blunt, which makes it seem thicker. It does nothing to the follicle below the skin, which is what actually controls growth.

If you want better growth, focus on hydration, nutrition, sleep and stress — not the razor.

Myth 2: “Genetics determine everything”

Genetics matter, but they aren’t everything. Three things influence growth: genetics set density and pattern, hormones drive speed and thickness, and skin health decides whether your follicles are in good condition to begin with.

Irritated, flaky, dry skin will slow things down even with good genetics. You can have unremarkable genetics and still grow a good beard with the right routine.

Myth 3: “Beard oil makes your beard grow faster”

Beard oil doesn’t sprout new follicles. What it does is keep the skin and hair in good condition, reduce breakage, and stop flaking and dryness — which is what makes a beard look fuller and healthier.

Myth 4: “If it’s patchy after two weeks, it always will be”

False. Your beard at 14 days is not your beard at 90 days. Follicles mature, density increases, hairs thicken and growth direction improves.

Roughly: 30 days is an early preview, 60 days is filling in, 90 days is a real beard, and six to twelve months is your final potential. Most men quit far too early.

Myth 5: “Beard balm is optional”

Optional if you want scruffy, flat and puffy. For medium and long beards, balm is what gives shape, control, moisture lock and day-long structure.

Myth 6: “Beard dandruff means you’re dirty”

It doesn’t. It usually means your skin is dry, your shampoo is too harsh, or you’re overwashing. Oil daily, balm to lock moisture in, exfoliate weekly, and use a beard wash rather than hair shampoo.

Myth 7: “If it doesn’t look good by day 10, quit”

Some of the best beards look terrible during early growth. The awkward phase is real. Give it 30 to 90 days, train it with brushing, oil daily, and shape only the neckline and cheek line.

Myth 8: “More products means a better beard”

A better routine beats more products. What actually matters:

Keep it simple and keep it consistent.

Myth 9: “Beard hair is dirty, so wash it daily”

Daily washing removes the oils your beard needs. Beard wash two to three times a week, rinse with water daily, oil and balm daily.

Myth 10: “Sensitive skin can’t handle beard products”

It can, if the products are made for it. The problem is rarely beard products in general — it’s nut oils, harsh fragrances, sulfates and cheap fillers.

Ours are vegan, cruelty-free, gluten-free and pharmacist-formulated. The beard oil is free of all tree-nut oils; the balms and creams contain refined shea and cocoa butter, so we don’t call those nut-free.

What actually grows a better beard

Hydrated skin, a moisturised beard, healthy follicles, less irritation, sensible trimming — and time. There is no shortcut, and anyone selling you one is selling you something else.
