Petrolatum in Beard Products: Why Dermatologists Rate It
Petrolatum has terrible branding and an excellent evidence base. Those two facts have been pulling in opposite directions for about fifteen years, and marketing has mostly won.
We use it. Here's the reasoning, including the parts that are genuinely worth knowing.
What it actually does
Petrolatum is an occlusive. It forms a semi-permeable film on the skin surface that dramatically slows transepidermal water loss — the water that continuously evaporates out through your skin.
It is exceptionally good at this. Studies have found petrolatum reduces water loss by around 98%, which is far more than most alternatives manage. It doesn't add moisture; it stops the moisture that's there from leaving, which is what a compromised barrier needs.
Under a beard, that matters. The skin under facial hair is difficult to reach, chronically under-treated, and frequently barrier-compromised from over-washing. An occlusive that holds water in is doing precisely the right job.
Why dermatologists like it
- It's about as non-irritating as an ingredient gets. Very low rates of contact allergy — in patch testing it's often used as a control substance precisely because so few people react to it.
- It doesn't sensitise. Unlike many botanical ingredients, it won't create a new allergy through repeated exposure.
- It's stable. It doesn't oxidise or go rancid, so it needs no antioxidants and less preservative load.
- It's well studied. Decades of use and a large literature, which is more than can be said for most trendy botanicals.
For anyone with reactive, eczema-prone or genuinely sensitive skin, that combination is hard to beat.
The objections, honestly assessed
"It's a petroleum by-product"
True, and irrelevant to how it behaves on skin. Origin is not a safety argument — plenty of plant-derived ingredients are potent sensitisers and plenty of mineral ones are inert. The relevant question is what it does, not where it came from.
"It's contaminated with PAHs"
This one has a real basis and a real answer. Unrefined petroleum products can contain polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are a genuine concern. Cosmetic-grade petrolatum is refined specifically to remove them, and it's regulated on exactly this point — the EU permits it only where the refining history is fully known. "USP" or "White Petrolatum" on a label indicates the refined pharmaceutical grade.
So the concern is legitimate about crude material and addressed in the grade actually used in cosmetics.
"It suffocates the skin"
Not accurate. Petrolatum forms a semi-permeable film, not a plastic wrap — gas exchange continues. Skin doesn't respire in the way this objection imagines.
"It clogs pores"
The one worth taking seriously. Petrolatum itself rates low on the comedogenic scale, but it's an occlusive — so if you apply it over something comedogenic, or over unwashed skin, it holds that against the skin too. It's a sealant, and it seals whatever is underneath. Clean skin first.
Where we use it and why
Refined white petrolatum is in our Beard Balm and Beard Cream. In the cream it works alongside hyaluronic acid, urea and glycerin — humectants that draw water into the skin — with the petrolatum keeping it there. Humectants without an occlusive can actually make things worse in dry air, because the water they attract evaporates away.
It's not in the Beard Oil, which is a different kind of product doing a different job.
We could take it out and put "petrolatum-free" on the label. It would sell slightly better and work slightly worse, and that trade isn't one I'm willing to make.
