Is There Gluten in Your Beard Products?

Plenty of people read food labels carefully and never think to read their grooming products. Beard products are the ones where it is most worth doing, for a simple reason: whatever you put on your moustache sits directly above your mouth all day, transfers to your lip, and ends up on your food.

If you avoid gluten, that is a reasonable thing to want to know about.

Where gluten hides on a label

It rarely appears as the word gluten. Look for these instead:

• Hydrolysed wheat protein — common in conditioning products, and one of the most frequent sources.
• Triticum vulgare — wheat, under its botanical name. Wheat germ oil is popular in beard oils.
• Avena sativa — oats. Not gluten-containing in themselves, but very often cross-contaminated unless certified.
• Hordeum vulgare — barley.
• Secale cereale — rye.
• Tocopherol — vitamin E, which is usually derived from soy but can be derived from wheat. Worth asking about.

The question most brands can't answer

Formulation and manufacturing are two different things. A product can contain no gluten-derived ingredient and still pick up traces if it runs on shared equipment after a batch that did.

Brands that outsource to large contract manufacturers frequently cannot tell you what ran before their batch, because they genuinely do not know. This is why the useful question is not only "is it gluten-free" but "do you control the manufacturing".

What to ask a brand

• Is any ingredient wheat, barley, rye or oat derived?
• Where is the tocopherol sourced from?
• Is the product made on dedicated equipment, or shared?
• Is there testing, or is this a formulation claim only?

A brand that cannot answer the third question is telling you something regardless of how it answers the first.
