Can You Use Beard Oil on the Rest of Your Face?

Can You Use Beard Oil on the Rest of Your Face?

It's a reasonable question with a slightly annoying answer: usually yes, sometimes no, and it depends far more on what's in the bottle than on what the bottle is called.

A beard oil is just an oil blend

There is no ingredient class that makes something "a beard oil" rather than "a face oil." Both are carrier oils with something for scent. The naming is marketing and packaging — a dropper or pump, a masculine label, a section of the shop.

Which means the question isn't "is beard oil safe on skin" — it's already going on skin, since a properly applied beard oil goes on the skin underneath the beard first. The question is whether this particular blend suits the skin you'd be extending it to.

When it's fine

  • The carriers are non-comedogenic. Jojoba, rosehip, abyssinian, hemp seed, Kalahari melon. These behave well on facial skin generally.
  • Your skin is dry or normal. An oil is a reasonable last step to seal in a moisturiser.
  • You're using it over damp skin. Oil traps water; it doesn't supply it. On dry skin it's a coating, not a moisturiser.

When it isn't

  • The base is coconut oil and your skin breaks out. This is the most common failure and the easiest to check — it'll be in the first three ingredients. More here.
  • You have acne-prone skin and the blend is heavy. The cheek and forehead are more prone to congestion than the skin under a beard, which is partly protected by the hair.
  • You're using actives. An oil layered over retinoids or acids changes how they penetrate, and generally not helpfully. Oil last, and preferably not on the same nights.
  • Around the eyes. Thinner skin, and fragranced products — including essential-oil-scented ones like ours — don't belong there.

What it does not replace

This is the part that trips people up. An oil is an occlusive and emollient — it seals and softens. It is not a humectant, so it doesn't bring water into the skin.

If your skin is dehydrated, an oil alone will make it feel smoother while leaving it dehydrated underneath. You need something that supplies water — hyaluronic acid, glycerin, urea — with the oil on top to hold it there. More on those.

It also doesn't replace sunscreen, cleanser, or anything treating a specific condition.

The sensible order

  1. Cleanse
  2. Anything water-based, onto damp skin
  3. Moisturiser, if you use one
  4. Oil last — skin under the beard first, then out through the hair
  5. Sunscreen in the morning, over everything

Oil goes last because nothing water-based penetrates through it. Applying an oil then a serum is applying a serum to an oil slick.

The honest recommendation

If your beard oil is well formulated and your skin tolerates it, extending it to your cheeks and neck is fine and saves you owning two products.

But a dedicated face cream will usually serve facial skin better, because it can include humectants and barrier ingredients an anhydrous oil can't carry. Our Hemp Face Cream exists for that reason — built to work under a beard as well as around it.

Our Beard Oil is non-comedogenic and nut-free, so it's one of the safer ones to extend. Just don't expect it to do a humectant's job.
